ActivityThe eminent psychiatrist was born in Bingen-am-Rhine and studied medicine in the Universities of Heidelberg, Kiel and Munich. After graduating in 1912 he worked at Heidelberg Psychiatric Clinic where he was appointed Associate Professor of Psychiatry in 1929. He emigrated from Nazi Germany and was a Rockefeller Research Fellow at Maudsley Hospital in London. In 1939 he was appointed Director of Clinical Research at Crichton Royal Hospital where he remained until he retired from the NHS in 1954. While at Crichton Royal Hospital he developed the Department of Clinical Research and ran the Insulin Coma Therapy Unit. He continued his work at Birmingham Medical School and with professorships in Bangalore, Munich and Hamburg. He died on 14 February 1961 in Birmingham.
