Person NameDumfries District Lunacy Board; 1858-1914
ActivityDistrict Lunacy Boards were established after the passing of The Lunacy (Scotland) Act 1857 (20 & 21 Vict. c.71) and were supervised by the General Board of Commissioners in Lunacy for Scotland. The District Boards were made up of representatives of the commissioners of supply and magistrates of burghs and their role was to ensure the provision of asylums for the reception and care of pauper lunatics in their respective areas. In the Dumfries area however, provision was already in place in the form of Southern Counties Asylum, which was opened in 1849 by the Board of Trustees and Directors of Crichton Royal Institution. In 1914 the District Lunacy Boards became District Boards of Control and the General Board of Commissioners, the General Board of Control for Scotland after the passing of the Mental Deficiency and Lunacy (Scotland) Act 1913, (3 & 4 Geo. V, c.38). District Boards of Control were abolished in 1930 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929, (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25), with their function being taken over by county councils.
