ActivityJohn Rutherford was born at New Farm in the parish of Kirkpatrick Juxta, near Dumfries. At the age of fifteen he left for Bristol where he established a drapery business. After considerable success he sold his business and returned to Dumfries in 1875, purchasing the estate of Jardington in the parish of Terregles. There he spent his time carrying out many pursuits including researching matters of scientific and natural history interest. He was an active member of the Dumfries and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society, in which he held the post of Secretary for a time and made several contributions to their Transactions. He was also a gifted wood carver, photographer and horologist. He died in Dumfries after a short period of illness on 23 November 1925.
