ActivityMoffatt was born on 31 October 1807. In his early career he was articled to William Burn in Edinburgh. He changed the spelling of his surname from Moffat to Moffatt, adopting an additional t. In 1836 he won the competition for Wakefield Corn Exchange and settled in Doncaster. In 1838 William Hurst of Doncaster invited him to become a partner, where they had a successful practice. On 8 December 1844 Hurst died and Moffatt continued the Doncaster practice. A lot of his business came from hospitals and poorhouses in Scotland including, work at Southern Counties Asylum in the grounds of Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries and the new asylum at Montrose. He closed his Doncaster practice in 1858 and moved back to Edinburgh, taking James Aitken into partnership in 1873. He died on 5 June 1882 at 23 Minto Street, Edinburgh.
