ActivityArthur George Sydney Mitchell, known as Sydney, was born at Headswood in Larbert, Stirlingshire on 1 January 1856. His father, Dr Arthur Mitchell (later Sir Arthur) was qualified in both medicine and law and was a Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner for the General Board of Commissioners in Lunacy for Scotland. Sydney was educated at Edinburgh University before being articled to Robert Rowand Anderson in 1878. In 1883 he set up his own practice at 122 George Street in Edinburgh. His first commissions were in 1883, followed by his appointment as architect to the Commercial Bank of Scotland. His assistant George Wilson was taken into partnership around 1887, the practice then becoming Sydney Mitchell & Wilson. They became architects to the Board of Lunacy in Scotland resulting in the building of many important works from c.1888, including the rebuilding of Craighouse in Edinburgh for the Managers of the Royal Asylum, significant work at Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries, in the 1890s, when he became official architect to the Managers of the Crichton Royal Institution, and work for the Managers of the Melrose Asylum and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Edinburgh.

Other notable works include the recreation of the Muckle Cross in Elgin in c.1882, the restoration of the Market Cross in Edinburgh in 1885 and the commission for designing the 'Old Edinburgh' section of the Edinburgh Exhibition of 1886. His last commission was the offices for the United Free Church in George Street in Edinburgh. He died at Gullane on 13 October 1930.
