ActivityDr Harper was born in Dumfriesshire and grew up in Scotland and the Channel Islands. He studied at the University of Edinburgh graduating in medicine in 1939. He held posts as house physician at Ayr County Hospital and as assistant physician at Royal Edinburgh Hospital. He served in the Second World War as a medical officer in the RAF, receiving a MBE for his services in 1945. Dr Harper then took up post at Crichton Royal Hospital in 1947, becoming assistant physician and then physician superintendent from 1957 to 1966. He left Crichton Royal Hospital and was appointed Medical Director at St Andrew's Hospital in Northampton. He retired in 1975, but was appointed as Lord Chancellor's Visitor, a position he held until 1978. He served as a member on several boards including, the Scottish Health Services Council, the Scottish Medical Advisory Committee and Chairman of Dumfries and Galloway British Medical Association. Dr Harper died in Kirkcudbright on 2 November 2005.
