Activity
Established by the Lunacy (Scotland) Act 1857 (20 & 21 Vict., c.71), which resulted from the 1855-1857 Scottish Lunacy Commission enquiry into the provision of care for the mentally ill in Scotland, as the centralised body responsible for inspecting and regulating asylums in Scotland. The Board comprised Commissioners who visited all Scottish asylums twice a year and compiled reports, the results of which were published in their Annual Reports.
