James Adam was born in Perth in 1834, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, qualifying in 1857 as licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He then went to India working as a surgeon with the East India Company. In 1860 he graduated M.D. of St Andrews University. On his return he specialised in mental disease working at Bethnal House Asylum, Middlesex County Asylum, then as medical superintendent of the Metropolitan District Asylum at Caterham in Surrey. He was appointed medical superintendent at Crichton Royal Institution in 1880, but resigned from his post after only a few years in 1883. He went on to open a private asylum at Malling Place, West Malling, Kent where he was resident physician for the rest of his life. He died 25 October 1908.
