John Gilmour's artwork was found in an envelope at the rear of the C. R. I. Scrapbook, DGH1/6/17/1. A manuscript note by Dr C. C. Easterbrook on the envelope reads, 'some coloured sketches by a patient who suffered from delusions of persecution and was treated in various mental hospitals in U.S.A. and afterwards in Scotland at Glasgow Royal ('Gartnaval') and at Crichton Royal where actually he improved and was discharged.' It is likely they were retained either by Dr J. Rutherford, Physician Superintendent 1883-1907, or Dr C. C. Easterbrook, Physician Superintendent 1908-1937. They were removed and mounted on card in 1994.
