ActivityThe CRI Act, 'An Act to Incorporate the Trustees and others, Directors of the Crichton Royal Institution for Lunatics at Dumfries, and for the better enabling them to carry on their charitable Designs' received Royal Assent on 3 July 1840 (IV. Vict. 1840). This Act established the Board's management of the hospital and outlined their powers. The Board comprised the three surviving original Trustees, Mrs Elizabeth Crichton, Colonel William Grierson of Bardannoch and Admiral Charles James Johnston of Cowhill; seven additional Statutory Trustees, all ex-officio appointments; and five appointed Directors, selected local men of standing who would hold office for terms of three years. As each original Trustee died, Admiral Johnston in 1856, Elizabeth Crichton in 1862 and Colonel Grierson in 1865, named successors took the positions of Testementary Trustees.
