Inscription reads, '19 June 1855', 'James Yorstoun Thorburn. Chevalier of the Grand Cross of Poland. To Cowper James Yorstoun Thorburn with Papa's love. June 19th 1855. Sketched by Wm Bartholomew Esq of Edinburgh'.
The sketch accompanies a letter to Thorburn's son. Thorburn was also a patient at Crichton Royal Institution and Southern Counties Asylum.
